Description
The federal Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed by Congress in 1978 to prevent the forced removal of Native children from their families. At the time, 25-35% of all Native children were removed from their families; 85% of those children were placed in non-Native homes. While it was an anomaly in federal child welfare law when it was enacted, today ICWA is widely recognized as the gold standard of child welfare policy and practice. It keeps Native children connected to their family, community, and culture whenever possible. This webinar provides an overview of ICWA and highlights social work best practices to provide active efforts to keep Native families together and to reunify them if children are removed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with the major provisions of ICWA.
2. Participants will be able to distinguish between reasonable and active efforts.
3. Participants will be able to describe concrete examples of active efforts.
4. Participants will learn about how collaborative relationships with tribal governments and urban Native organizations increase opportunities to provide active efforts with greater likelihood of families being able to stay together.
